Hello Henry,

I have been struggling to survive.

In fact, even as an amateur writer, I have been chronicling my story into a book entitled “Shattered Illusions of my Survival”. Writing gives me an outlet to pour out my pain and suffering.

It would be great if I could somehow earn a living at writing or even public speaking and motivation to warn others what NOT to do; since I have noticed over the decades, that when I speak, people are drawn to me and want to hear what I have to say. I often analyze problems and devise solutions.

I am drawn to topics involving justice, relationships and communication whether in society or in personal situations. I once had several radio programs, did I ever tell you? In one of them, I taught a book I had written, in 13 segments or classes. I enjoy teaching people, because I have had so many tragic experiences, that I truly wish others to avoid the same pitfalls.

I need to find a way to earn a simple income in order to pay a simple rent on a small studio apartment. Because money is the solution to this dilemma of homelessness, I am desperately trying to find a way to earn money. We don’t live in a society where some benefactor will open their heart and home to me and let me live with them, perhaps as trade/barter to be their housekeeper, cook, bake and clean, or even a home secretary for them. We live in a selfish world based on money. No money, no housing.

We also live in a world that demands certain “experience” for jobs and even if I tell people I can learn the job, they don’t want to hear that. I am about your age, in my early sixties, and cannot do “standing on your feet all day” jobs; poverty and homelessness do tend to exhaust you much faster than you realize; both physically and emotionally.

If I were a wife that would be my joyful “job”; I don’t have that luxury. I have to find a way to generate money in order to end my homelessness. Some people are blessed with good family and friends for their “time in need”. Unfortunately, my family is very dysfunctional going back 4 generations and they simply do not respond to my situation as normal loving family members would ordinarily respond. Tragically, my own 5 children refuse to open their homes to let me live with them.

I have unusually harsh karma and my hardships are beyond most people’s comprehension. I have to walk several miles to just get milk. No one truly understands what I go through to survive.

One would think that the basic foundation of my family’s religion ~ Orthodox Judaism, is to help the needy, with food, clothing and shelter. Yet not one of my relatives will help me.

My family hold grudges of hatred against me for putting my children into public schools after my husband abandoned me while I was pregnant with my fifth child. He lied to me, cheated on me and stole from me, but this is okay and people overlook his misconduct. I don’t see human qualities of mercy, kindness, compassion, sympathy from my family. No, there is no support system there. This is a painful saga, and I know people tend to “blame the victim”. But others had a hand in destroying my life and putting up obstacles.

I do believe my father was either an Illuminati or something similar. He tortured me by not letting me sleep in a bed; I had to share a sofa with my sister and he would sneak in at night and shut off the heat, so we would freeze in the living room, which had 9 windows.

He did secretive mind control and hypnosis on my baby brother while he was asleep. He had a collection of books on mind control techniques and after he died I read them and realized he practiced those techniques on me and my siblings. I spent the first 7 years of my life in a crib. That is torture.

True human kindness and compassion on the part of someone would help me. I made the tragic mistake of believing the lies of a fraudulent business whose members posed as professional teachers and healers, who in reality are severely mentally ill, demonic, deranged, sociopath dangerous predators who exploited me so thoroughly that they broke me down, inflicted a heart attack on me and made me homeless.

I have not recovered since then, 12 years ago. I am now almost 62 and I don’t know how much longer I will survive this homelessness. “Unarius academy of science ~ the new world teaching center.” Those charlatans, con artists, have never been held accountable by any state or federal agency or judicial arena. They continue on with their false advertising and marketing schemes to lure more victims whether to rape them as they did to me, and/or to financially fleece them as they did to me.

They basically promise the public to heal and teach them, and then sell them useless books and classes; they have no professional licenses or degrees to teach or do therapy. It is merely a scam to defraud the public; the gullible naive unsuspecting vulnerable public. I sued them twice and the corrupt courts ignored my information and evidence.

Kindly excuse this long missive, but I don’t sleep much. I sleep about 2 hours per night so I sit in the dark and write. I am inside a store with permission of the owner. But I am still homeless, this is not a home; there is no kitchen or bathtub or shower. I do have a hot-pot for boiling soup or tea.

Stay out of California and especially San Diego; it has a peculiar evil energy grid to it. It has a “reversal energy” which most people deny, but I see it and sense it. The energy tends to magnetize certain people who are not normal in a greater proportion than I have seen anywhere else. This evokes greater pain and suffering, without any resolution. I just want my situation to end, so if you say prayers, please say one for me.

Is this genuine? Without a doubt it is very much a possibility for today's aging female populace. I have come very close to the situation she describes. I relate fully to her potential for employment. In my early sixties, I have looked for three years for work, unsuccessfully and had exactly the same results. Yet my daughters, young beautiful and bright, are, even in these days of financial woes, are offered excellent jobs without even asking ~ it is the way of things today.

However I am very fortunate. When I returned from India, sicker than sick, a few years ago, I was more or less homeless and slept in my destroyed apartment but lived at my Mother's. One more week to go and I would not have anywhere to put anything from photos to furniture ~ and too sick to care. Somehow I ended up in a very small apartment that has a view of the ocean and mountains that leaves me breathless daily.

Writers are not paid well at all. I have struggled with the idea of PAYPAL here but I just cannot go there. Knowledge should come free and be shared freely and I simply squeeze by on an allotted pittance, grateful for that.

So I can only gather Marie lives in the US where such things are not available. Why is it this way when you look at so many feral homes that people just walked away from? Something stinks here, and its name is greed.

It is truly horrific what this woman has gone through. The fact that she is Jewish was shocking because we do not expect them to wind up in this situation, but I guess if you do not toe the line then this is your fate. She mentions Orthodox and they are frequently very hard line with their beliefs so it does not surprise me that she is ignored by her family. They would feel she did it to herself and is no longer in the fold.

The upbringing she received from her father would leave her either amazingly strong or, as is usually the case, ill equipped to deal with the true evils of the world. This I know well myself also. Our generation was brought up under much stricter guidelines on the whole.

There are other stories just like this one the most notable was from Svali raised in an Illuminati family that subjected her to mind control, torture and sexual deviance. How she escaped was truly remarkable and set back the clamping down of the Illuminati by about a decade, although, alas they are back on track and she had to disappear so far underground that she lives away from any form of contact with the world.

The human species during its brief time on Earth has exhibited a remarkable capacity to kill itself off.

Neanderthals.

The Cro-Magnons dispatched the gentler Neanderthals.

The conquistadors, with the help of smallpox, decimated the native populations in the Americas.

Modern industrial warfare in the 20th century took at least 100 million lives, most of them civilians.

And now we sit passive and dumb as corporations and the leaders of industrialized nations ensure that climate change will accelerate to levels that could mean the extinction of our species.

Homo sapiens, as the biologist Tim Flannery points out, are the “future-eaters.”

In the past when civilizations went belly up through greed, mismanagement and the exhaustion of natural resources, human beings migrated somewhere else to pillage anew.

But this time the game is over.
There is nowhere else to go.

The industrialized nations spent the last century seizing half the planet and dominating most of the other half. We giddily exhausted our natural capital, especially fossil fuel, to engage in an orgy of consumption and waste that poisoned the Earth and attacked the ecosystem on which human life depends.

It was quite a party...
if you were a member of the industrialized elite.
But it was pretty stupid.

Collapse this time around will be global.

We will disintegrate together.

And there is no way out.

The 10,000-year experiment of settled life

is about to come to a crashing halt.

And humankind,

which thought it was given dominion

over the Earth and all living things,

will be taught a painful lesson

in the necessity of balance, restraint and humility.

There is no human monument or city ruin that is more than 5,000 years old. Civilization, Ronald Wright notes in “A Short History of Progress,” “occupies a mere 0.2 percent of the two and a half million years since our first ancestor sharpened a stone.”

Bye-bye, Paris.

Welcome to the new experience of human existence,

in which rooting around for grubs

on islands in northern latitudes

is the prerequisite for survival.

We view ourselves as rational creatures.

But is it rational to wait like sheep in a pen as careless, profit motive driven oil and natural gas companies, coal companies, chemical industries, plastics manufacturers, the automotive industry, arms manufacturers and the leaders of the industrial world, as they did in Copenhagen, take us to mass extinction? Oops, did I forget to mention governments intent on winning wars regardless of the cost to our planet?

It is too late

to prevent

profound climate change.

But why add fuel to the fire?

Why allow our ruling elite,

driven by the lust for profits,

to accelerate the death spiral?

Why continue to obey

the laws and dictates

of our executioners?

The accelerating disintegration of Arctic Sea ice

means that summer ice will probably disappear

within the next decade.

The open water

will absorb more solar radiation,

significantly increasing

the rate of global warming.

The Siberian permafrost will disappear,

sending up plumes of methane gas

from underground.

The Greenland ice sheet

and the Himalayan-Tibetan glaciers

will melt.

Jay Zwally, a NASA climate scientist, declared in December 2007:

“The Arctic is often cited as the canary in the coal mine for climate warming. Now, as a sign of climate warming, the canary has died. It is time to start getting out of the coal mines.”

Reality is rarely
an impediment
to human folly.

The world’s greenhouse gases have continued to grow since Zwally’s statement.

Global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from burning fossil fuels since 2000 have increased by 3 per cent a year. At that rate annual emissions will double every 25 years.

James Hansen, the head of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and one of the world’s foremost climate experts, has warned that if we keep warming the planet it will be “a recipe for global disaster.”

The safe level of CO₂ in the atmosphere, Hansen estimates, is no more than 350 parts per million (ppm).

The current level of CO₂ is 385 ppm and climbing. This already guarantees terrible consequences even if we act immediately to cut carbon emissions.

The natural carbon cycle for 3 million years has ensured that the atmosphere contained less than 300 ppm of CO₂, which sustained the wide variety of life on the planet. The idea now championed by our corporate elite, at least those in contact with the reality of global warming, is that we will intentionally overshoot 350 ppm and then return to a safer climate through rapid and dramatic emission cuts.

This, of course, is a theory designed to absolve the elite from doing anything now. But as Clive Hamilton in his book “Requiem for a Species: Why We Resist the Truth About Climate Change” writes, even “if carbon dioxide concentrations reach 550 ppm, after which emissions fell to zero, the global temperatures would continue to rise for at least another century.”

Copenhagen was perhaps
the last chance to save ourselves.

of the industrialized nations blew it.

Radical climate change is certain.

It is only a question now of how bad it will become.

The engines of climate change will, climate scientists have warned, soon create a domino effect that could thrust the Earth into a chaotic state for thousands of years before it regains equilibrium.

“Whether human beings would still be a force on the planet, or even survive, is a moot point,” Hamilton writes. “One thing is certain: there will be far fewer of us.”

We have fallen prey to the illusion that we can modify and control our environment, that human ingenuity ensures the inevitability of human progress and that our secular god of science will save us.

The “intoxicating belief that we can conquer all has come up against a greater force, the Earth itself,” Hamilton writes. “The prospect of runaway climate change challenges our technological hubris, our Enlightenment faith in reason and the whole modernist project. The Earth may soon demonstrate that, ultimately, it cannot be tamed and that the human urge to master nature has only roused a slumbering beast.”

We face a terrible political truth.

Those who hold power

will not act with the urgency required

to protect human life and the ecosystem.

Decisions about the fate

of the planet and human civilization

are in the hands of moral and intellectual trolls

such as BP’s Tony Hayward.

These political and corporate masters are driven by a craven desire to accumulate wealth at the expense of human life.

They do this in the Gulf of Mexico.

They do this in the massive tar sand pits of Alberta.

They do so with impunity and greed

and a foolish belief that they are above it all,

including the forces of Nature.

They do this in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, where the export-oriented industry is booming. China’s transformation into totalitarian capitalism, done so world markets can be flooded with cheap consumer goods, is contributing to a dramatic rise in carbon dioxide emissions, which in China are expected to more than double by 2030, from a little over 5 billion metric tons to just under 12 billion.

Gates did not wish these images to reach the American public, but here they are.

Think of these women when you purchase your next mouse or computer gadget.

This degradation of the planet by corporations is accompanied by a degradation of human beings. In the factories in Guangdong we see the face of our adversaries.

The sociologist Ching Kwan Lee found “satanic mills” in China’s industrial southeast that run “at such a nerve-racking pace that worker’s physical limits and bodily strength are put to the test on a daily basis.”

Some employees put in workdays of 14 to 16 hours with no rest day during the month until payday. In these factories it is normal for an employee to work 400 hours or more a month, especially those in the garment industry.

Most workers, Lee found, endure unpaid wages, illegal deductions and substandard wage rates. They are often physically abused at work and do not receive compensation if they are injured on the job. Every year a dozen or more workers die from overwork in the city of Shenzhen alone.

In Lee’s words, the working conditions “go beyond the Marxist notions of exploitation and alienation.”

Lunch break.

A survey published in 2003 by the official China News Agency, cited in Lee’s book “Against the Law: Labor Protests in China’s Rustbelt and Sunbelt,” found that three in four migrant workers had trouble collecting their pay. Each year scores of workers threaten to commit suicide, Lee writes, by jumping off high-rises or setting themselves on fire over unpaid wages.

“If getting paid for one’s labor is a fundamental feature of capitalist employment relations, strictly speaking many Chinese workers are not yet laborers,” Lee writes.

The leaders of these corporations now determine our fate.

They are not endowed
with human decency or compassion.

Yet their lobbyists make the laws.
Their public relations firms craft the propaganda
and trivia pumped out through systems of mass communication.
Their money determines elections.

Their greed turns workers into global serfs
and our planet into a wasteland.

As climate change advances,
we will face a choice between obeying the rules
put in place by corporations

or rebellion.

Those who work human beings to death

in overcrowded factories in China

and turn the Gulf of Mexico

into a dead zone are the enemy.

They serve systems of death.

They cannot be reformed or trusted.

The climate crisis is a political crisis.
We will either defy the corporate elite,
which will mean civil disobedience,
a rejection of traditional politics
for a new radicalism
and the systematic breaking of laws,
or see ourselves consumed.

Time is not on our side.
The longer we wait,
the more assured our destruction becomes.

The future,
if we remain passive,
will be wrested from us by events.

Our moral obligation
is not to structures of power,
but life.

Thank you Brother Nathanael for this excellent piece of journalistic research! This is indeed an article that needs to be read by all, not only those of us already on to their deadly ploys. How deadly? Ask the Palestinians and the Lebanese. Ask the victims of every war for many decades, ask the people dieing in the Mexican Gulf. Ask the thousands of sex slaves that are marketed around the globe and the poor women still sold in Tel Aviv today. Ask anyone who has had to deal with the dark side of these pernicious people.

EMERGING FROM DEEP SECRECY, portions of the Protocols Of The Learned Elders Of Zion were brought to light in the late 19th Century in France.

It is a fascinating story, presented here in a unique, unprecedented and thoroughly documented fashion. Months of intense research has gone into this work.

In 1884, a Mademoiselle Justine Glinka, the daughter of a Russian general, was engaged in Paris in gathering political information for the court of Tzar Alexander III.

Glinka employed a Jewish agent named Joseph Schoerst, alias Shapiro, who had passed himself off as a Freemason and a member of the Mizraim Lodge, a Jewish Masonic order with its own particular rites and protocols.

None other than Solomon Rothschild, scion of the Jewish banking dynasty, was a prominent member of the French Freemasons.

Schoerst offered to Glinka for the sum of 2,500 francs, a document which he said would interest her greatly. This document contained extraordinary dictated writings from assorted speeches which would later be included in the final compilation of the Protocols of Zion.

Glinka quickly passed the document to her immediate superior in Paris, General Orgeyevski, who sent them, in turn, to General Cherevin, Minister of the Interior, for transmission directly to the Imperial Court in St Petersburg.

Upon Cherevin’s death in 1896, he willed a copy of his memoirs containing the Protocols to Tzar Nicholas II. (View Sources Here, Here & Here.)

Glinka’s information eventually found its way into the hands of one Sergei Nilus, a highly educated Russian mystic attached to Tsar Nicholas II’s court who served as Minister of Foreign Religions.

In 1902, Nilus published, “The Rule of Satan on Earth ~ Notes of an Orthodox Believer,” in which he cites excerpts from this early aggregation of the material first purchased by Madame Glinka.

Next stop for the Protocols occurred in 1903 when a prominent publisher by the name of Pavel Krusheva quoted writings from the Protocols in his daily newspaper, Znamya. After its publication, Krusheva suffered an attempt on his life and from that moment on, he lived in constant fear and had to carry weapons for his own protection. He also took the step of being accompanied by a personal cook to prevent being poisoned.

In 1905, Sergei Nilus published a new edition of his “Rule of Satan” which included a complete version of the Protocols as the final chapter. This was the first time a full compilation of the Protocols had been made available to the general public in book form.

In 1917, (the same year of the final Russian Revolution), Nilus had prepared a final edition ~ fully documented ~ but before he could distribute it, Kerensky, a half-Jew, who had succeeded to power after the Revolution, had most of the copies destroyed. Anyone caught by the Bolsheviks in possession of The Protocols was shot on the spot.

In 1918, the Protocols appeared again in a Moscow periodical, The Sentinel, marked by the Jewish-led Bolsheviks as a counter-revolutionary newspaper. In February, 1919, the Bolsheviks ordered the newspaper shut down.

In 1924, Professor Nilus was arrested by the Jewish-dominated “Cheka,” imprisoned, and then tortured. He was told by the president of the court (who was Jewish) that this treatment was meted out to him for “having done them (the Zionist Bolshevik Jews) incalculable harm in publishing the Protocols.” (View Sources Here, Here, Here, Here, Here & Here.)

THE PROTOCOLS OF GINSBERG & PINSKER

THE DOMINATING FIGURE of the growing Zionist movement of the late 1800s, was a Jew by the name of Asher Ginsberg, who adopted the pseudonym, “Achad Ha’am,” meaning “one of the people.”

The son of a Jewish tax collector, Ginsberg was born in Kiev and later settled in Odessa, the Jewish center of activist agitation. Here he established in 1889 his Zionist group, “Sons Of Moses.”

Steeped in the works of Nietzsche, it was to the Sons of Moses that Ginsberg delivered his “protocols” for the annihilation of Christian culture and the ascendancy of Jewish nationalism based on Nietzsche’s own nationalistic vision for Germany.

The meetings of this secret society were held in Ginsberg’s house. Among the first members were: Ben Avigdor, Zalman Epstein, Louis Epstein, and Jacob Eisenstaat.

In early 1889, Ginsberg had broken with the more conservative forces of Zionism and moved into a radical position with his pamphlet, “This Is Not The Way.”

The intent of Ginsberg’s pamphlet was to oppose the “politically expedient” views of his former mentor, Leon Pinsker, a leader of the Lovers of Zion movement. Ginsberg wanted to first form a “national consciousness” in diaspora Jewry and the revival of conversational Hebrew prior to using political influence, as Pinsker promoted, for the establishing of a Jewish state.

Differences notwithstanding as regards timing, Pinsker did not differ from Ginsberg in the use of power to achieve their shared Zionist goals. In his book, “Auto-Emancipation,” Pinsker described the master-method to bring about this “self-emancipation” and to “restore the Jewish nation:”

A striking similarity to Pinsker’s political programme is found in Protocol No. 1:

Following in the footsteps of his mentor, Ginsberg’s forceful rhetoric, yet with a novel and direct appeal to fanaticism, also resembled the style of The Protocols when he insisted:

Ginsberg’s call for an aggressive Jewish nationalism is clearly mirrored in Protocol No. 5:

It is through persons who lived in Odessa at that time that information was obtained that a manuscript of the “Protocols” in Hebrew was circulated among the Jews.

Later, a Jew by the name of Herman Bernstein, publisher of the “Free Press” of Detroit, while claiming the Protocols to be a forgery, admitted in the presence of William Cameron secretary to Henry Ford, that he had personally read the Protocols in their published Hebrew form in Odessa.

During the Jewish-led Bolshevik Revolution, few towns were so torn as Odessa, where Ginsberg taught the destruction of Christian society, a basic tenet of The Protocols.

Among other outrages such as the raping of Christian women and girls, a Christian orphanage was destroyed and all the children shot to death. Racism and a deadly mockery of non-Jewish life was already an established practice of world Zionism. (View Sources Here, Here, Here & Here.)

LEARNED ELDERS

CLASSIFIED US INTELLIGENCE DOCUMENTS investigating international financial issues surrounding WW I were compiled in August 1919. These sensitive documents were given SECRET classification until 1973.

A hard copy of this document may be obtained from US National Archives in Washington DC ~ its number is 245-1.

On page 5 of the document, the public writings of Theodore Herzl, hailed as the father of world political Zionism, are cited as having “identity of thought found in the Protocols.”

This long-suppressed, finally declassified document, displays striking similarities between Herzl’s essay published in 1897 titled “The Jewish State” and Protocols 1 and 20:

Theodore Herzl:

“Every point which arises in the relations between nations is a question of might. I do not here surrender any portion of our prescriptive right when I make this statement.

In the world as it now is and will probably remain, might precedes right. For us to be loyal patriots as were the Huguenots who were forced to emigrate is therefore useless. The Jews must acquire economic power sufficiently great to overcome prejudice against them.

JUAN GONZALEZ: Well, while Goldman Sachs agreed Thursday to pay $550 million to resolve a civil fraud lawsuit filed by the SEC, Goldman has not been held accountable for many of its other questionable investment practices. A new article in Harper’s Magazine examines the role Goldman played in the food crisis of 2008, when the ranks of the world’s hungry increased by 250 million. The article is titled "The Food Bubble: How Wall Street Starved Millions and Got Away With It."

AMY GOODMAN: The author of the article, Frederick Kaufman, joins us now. He’s a contributing editor at Harper’s Magazine.

Well, explain. We’re talking about Goldman Sachs today, this ~ they call it a landmark settlement, but they made more after-hours in trading last night than they will have to pay. So let’s look at Goldman Sachs and its record overall.

FREDERICK KAUFMAN: Yeah, this is really ~ it’s really outrageous. And on a certain level, this reform bill is really a sham, because it does not cover, in any way, shape or form, what Goldman Sachs ~ and really, let’s be honest here, it wasn’t just Goldman; it was Goldman, and it was Bear, and it was AIG, and it was Lehman, it was Deutsche, it was all across the board, JPMorgan Chase ~ what these banks were able to do in commodity markets, really which reached its peak from 2005 to 2008, in what is now known as the food bubble.

And as Juan points out, this is unconscionable what happened, in the sense that their speculation and their restructuring of these commodity markets pushed 250 million new people into food insecurity and starving, and brought the world total up to over a billion people. This is the most abysmal total in the history of the world.

JUAN GONZALEZ: Now, what were these commodities markets like before the Wall Street firms got involved? And you have a haunting picture, especially of the Minneapolis Exchange, what it was before, what it was like. Could you talk about how things operated and then what Goldman Sachs did precisely?

FREDERICK KAUFMAN: The wheat markets, in particular, in this country are the outcome of a process of development of over 150 years. And that is why, from about 1903 to 2003, the real price of wheat in this country has gone down. And this was one of the great reasons for America’s great twentieth century, the fact that we had cheap food, we had cheap bread.

And Goldman, in 1991, came up with a new idea and a new product, which, as I said before, completely restructured this market and completely threw it out of whack.

But before we go there, we just have to maybe review for a second a little bit about how these markets worked and what kept that wheat price stabilized. And Juan, you mentioned the Minneapolis Grain Exchange, this kind of obscure syndicate in the Midwest, which is where the price of this particular kind of wheat, hard red spring wheat, which is the most widely traded wheat in the world, and it’s the most widely exported wheat from the American continent ~ we kind of set the world price on this wheat.

This is where it happens. What’s the history of that price being stabilized is you have, traditionally, in the wheat futures market, two kinds of players: one of the farmers and the millers and the warehousemen ~ right?

And this, of course, includes players like Domino’s Pizza and Sara Lee and General Mills, very large business, capitalist stakes are in this wheat market, right? And they are called bona fide hedgers, because they’re actually buying and selling real wheat.

As the price fluctuates in the futures markets, you also traditionally have speculators in this market, people who don’t want wheat, who wouldn’t have any place to put it if they bought it, but they’re making money off buy orders and sell orders, as the price fluctuates each day, and hopefully they’re bringing in some money for themselves every day. That’s the idea.

Now, the key here is that both the bona fide hedgers and the speculators, every time they buy, they’re also selling, and every time they sell, they eventually buy. So their positions are cleared off at the end of the day, OK?

Goldman, we have to understand, and a lot of these banks, are not interested in the particular structure of any of these markets. I think it’s a lot of mistake people make when they think about how these bankers are working. We think that they’re actually interested in the markets. We think that they’re ~ no. What they’re after are very large pools of cash for themselves. They’re after accumulating huge pools of money that they can do with whatever they like on a day-to-day basis. Right?

And so, Goldman, in 1991, came up with this idea of the commodity index fund, which really was a way for them to accumulate huge piles of cash for themselves. It wasn’t really about the markets, anyway. The market was just an excuse. And so, the fact that they threw these wheat markets out of whack didn’t really matter to them.

How did this work?

Instead of a buy-and-sell order, like everybody does in these markets, they just started buying. It’s called "going long." They started going long on wheat futures. OK? And every time one of these contracts came due, they would do something called "rolling it over" into the next contract. So they would take all those buy promises they had made and say, "OK, we still ~ we’re just going to ~ we’ll buy more later. And plus we’re going to buy more now."

And they kept on buying and buying and buying and buying and accumulating this unprecedented, this historically unprecedented pile of long-only wheat futures. And this accumulation created a very odd phenomenon in the market. It’s called a "demand shock." Usually prices go up because supply is low, right? That’s the idea. There’s not a lot of supply, so the price goes up.

In this case, Goldman and the other banks had introduced this completely unnatural and artificial demand to buy wheat, and that then set the price up. Now, a lot of people are saying, "Oh, it was biofuel production. It was drought in Australia. It was floods in Kazakhstan." Let me tell you, hard red wheat generally trades between $3 and $6 per sixty-pound bushel. It went up to $12, then $15, then $18. Then it broke $20. And on February 25th, 2008, hard red spring futures settled at $25 per bushel. This is completely beyond the pale, particularly at a ~

JUAN GONZALEZ: Almost ten times its historic price.

FREDERICK KAUFMAN: Yeah. It was just completely out of control. And, of course, the irony here is that in 2008, it was the greatest wheat-producing year in world history. The world produced more wheat in 2008 than ever before.

And here’s the other outrage of it, which is that at the time that Goldman and these other banks are completely messing up the structure of this market, they’ve protected themselves outside the market, through this really almost diabolical idea called "replication," which is what I discovered when I was looking into how they had structured this.

What they do ~ let’s say, Juan, you want me to invest for you in the wheat market. You give me a hundred bucks, OK? Well, what I should be doing is putting a hundred bucks in the wheat markets. But I don’t have to do that. All I have to do is put $5 in. Good-faith promise. And with that $5, I can hold your hundred-dollar position.

Well, now I got ninety-five of your dollars. What am I going to do with them? Well, what Goldman did with hundreds of billions of dollars, and what all these banks did with hundreds of billions of dollars, is they put them in the most conservative ~ no fools, they ~ they put them in the most conservative investments conceivable. They put it in T-bills.

And then what did they do? Well, now that you have hundreds of billions of dollars in T-bills, you can leverage that into trillions of dollars. This is what I’m talking about, large pools of cash for themselves.

And then they take that trillion dollars, they give it to their day traders, and they say, "Go at it, guys. Do whatever is most lucrative today."

And so, as billions of people starve, they use that money to make billions of dollars for themselves.

JUAN GONZALEZ: And the result was, as the price went up, that there were food riots around the world.

FREDERICK KAUFMAN: Yeah.

JUAN GONZALEZ: And what about the human dislocation that occurred?

FREDERICK KAUFMAN: Yeah, in 2008, there were food riots in more than thirty countries. The global price of food rose over 80 percent. This had an effect not only on wheat, but on corn, on soy, on cooking oil, on rice. You know, people talk about globalization.

"We don’t need to set prices or have tariffs, because we’re globalized. You know, people can buy their wheat, anyway."

Well, gee, guess what happened. When the price of wheat started to go through the roof, something new, which was something old, came up, called "nationalism," and people said, "OK, sorry, we’re closing our wheat, and we’re setting up tariffs." And you had ~ you had riots. You had hunger. You had a disaster. You had a global disaster, because, remember, in America, we’re spending maybe 15 percent of our weekly paycheck on food, right?

I mean, maybe you remember, a couple years ago, why was that dozen eggs so expensive? Why was that milk so expensive? Why was that meat so expensive? That’s 15 percent. For most people on the earth, they’re spending more than 50 percent of their daily income on their daily bread.

And when their daily bread moves up 80 percent, they’ve just moved right into the ranks of the food insecure. And it was not only in Burkina Faso. This was in America. You had 49 million hungry families in America. You had one out of five children in America at soup kitchens. You had a million hungry people in Los Angeles.

So, I mean, it is unconscionable that Wall Street has completely lost touch with the reality. They’ve forgotten that there is their mathematical formula, there’s virtuality, on the one hand ~ "Gee, I can make a lot of money by making a formula" ~ and on the other hand, there’s reality. There are real things that they are affecting, and they’ve completely forgotten about it, to devastating effect.

AMY GOODMAN: What do you think needs to be done?

FREDERICK KAUFMAN: Well, the solution is interesting, and it certainly is not going to be solved by the financial reform bill we’ve just seen, because, of course, the people I talk to at the Minneapolis Grain Exchange and all over, they’re already prepared for every single trade being exchange-traded. The people at the Minneapolis Grain Exchange have already prepared 50,000 exchange-traded slots for anything that people want to trade.

Now, when I was talking to the hedge fund guys and the traders and all my contacts on this, and I said, you know, "What if Wall Street ~ I’m sorry, what if the federal government regulates you?" they just laugh. They literally laugh.

They scoff at federal regulators, because they’re like, "By the time they get around, they figure out what we’re doing, we’re so far beyond it." And in fact, the commodity index funds, the long-only commodity index funds that I looked at now, they’re already dinosaurs. They’re onto second-, third- and fourth-generation reiterations of this. There’s no way the federal government is going to be on top of them, because they’re so far ahead.

So, what’s the other possibility? The other possibility is simply outlaw it, say, if you’re a bank, you’re not allowed a stake, you’re not allowed a stake in actual commodity markets. And I said to these guys, you know, "What if they just outlaw you?"

And once again, rather unsurprisingly, their reaction is outright laughter, because it takes them about ten seconds to get over that problem. Either they make a phone call to London and do all their trading out of the London Exchange, or they do an over-the-counter swap with a Cargill or a Nestlé or a bona fide hedger, and it’s taken care of.

So what’s the solution? I think the best solution that’s been floated around in Washington in the groups I’ve been close to is an actual international or national grain reserve. I mean, we actually in this country, before this kind of mania of deregulation, had a farmer-owned grain reserve under the Clinton administration, real grain held back, so that in times of a bubble like this, regulators can say, "

Look, you know, we have plenty of real wheat. Here’s a hundred million bushels of wheat. We can bring it to the market. We can bring that price back into a stable band." And this is, I think, in some ways, the best solution: real wheat to counter virtual madness.

JUAN GONZALEZ: Well, yet, as you were saying, that the Wall Street firms are always able to devise new ways to get around regulation. I was reading in today’s paper on the new bill, the financial regulation bill, that the banks have already devised new methods.

For instance, that they are no longer able to charge such exorbitant interest rates on credit cards, so now they’re going to begin imposing fees on checking accounts. And they just come up with an immediate new solution to keep making huge amounts of money and getting around the regulators.

So, even with this reserve situation that you raise about creating grain reserve, are there potentials for the Wall Street firms to figure out a new way to continue to control and make money off the food supply?

FREDERICK KAUFMAN: Well, I think the theory behind what you’re saying, Juan, is called "market capture," in the sense that whenever you have a group of people, be they in the auto business or in the healthcare business, whenever they fear regulation from the government, this group is, of course, the most at-risk group.

They are the ones who put more of their resources into understanding this regulation than anybody else, more of their lobbyists, more of their money into understanding what’s going on, and therefore, they’re the ones who ultimately ~ the people whose interest it touches most intrinsically are the ones who then capture that reform, market capture.

So what I like about the grain reserve is that it’s actually outside of the purview, outside of the financial purview. As I said before, it’s no longer in the realm of the virtual; it’s no longer in the realm of the numbers. It’s actual real wheat, and you can actually bring it to bear. You can bring it to markets. There was a complete madness for hard red spring wheat in 2008, when you had international orders coming in from Nigeria, from all over the world, and there literally was the perception that there was no wheat out there.

And so this thing, as you say, goes up and up and up and up and up. If there is actually somebody who can say, who can bring real wheat and calm these markets, you’re going to save lives. It’s not just that you’re going to save mortgages or that you’re going to save, you know, finances; it is that, literally, you no longer have those outrageous numbers of starving people on earth, most of them women and children.
