I was raised free range simply because the world was safer then and my home was solid. My daughters received a free range childhood as well. Much freer though. There were expectations to be met to keep that freedom however; it worked well. I hated having to ground them because it meant I had to be grounded 24/7 to make sure they behaved. Very rare and only one daughter required that. The one who ended up the best educated and most successful of most of us; she was so worth all that "work". She told me it was tough to sit with her friends when they complained about their parents because she had nothing to add to the conversation. She has always been a straight arrow but only free range parenting would have worked with her. Children today are not able to have free range parenting; our world in the West is just not safe for them! As I have lamented, our grandchildren will be unable to even imagine the freedoms we grew up with as a matter of course.
